Hello world and HAPPY EARTH DAY 🌿🌏💕! My Vegetable Romance is *finally* back. I never thought I’d reboot this blog under the auspices of a, er...global pandemic. I've been quarantining for 40+ days and my olympic talent for procrastination has finally collapsed. Nothing like being confined to 500 square feet in Brooklyn, NY—the fucking epicenter of this crisis in America—to get me writing about food again.

Atlanta locals: come see a beautiful exhibition of Kelly McMahon’s photographic work, opening August 2nd at 7:30 pm at Delilah-On-Sampson Gallery, which is adjacent to Jake’s Ice Cream. When I met Kelly in high school, her camera was an extension of herself. I’d follow her around little five points as she effortlessly made friends with and captured intimate portraits of the streets’ residents. I was in awe of her graciousness, kindness, and wit during my teenage years; towards me, her friends and family, and complete strangers. She was an incredible human being. I miss her every day. Show runs until September 14th. Donations may be made in Kelly’s honor to the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence in Decatur, GA.
Happy #Monday! Tonight’s dinner features homemade coconut #chutney, crispy #dosa, and pseudo-sambar stew. Super spicy and comforting. If you want to try your hand at sambar (a flavorful lentil stew you dip dosa in), check out my recipe on the blog (it’s an older post). Imagine lunch tomorrow: the smoky essence of cumin and hing perfumes your hair, and coworkers wistfully eye your tasty stew while they gum plasticky lean cuisines. Indian food is the best food 🤗
This one was hard to photograph, but here’s my simple Monday night dinner: rice, baked tofu with lots of cracked pepper, salt, and dried chili, and charred veggies and herbs with black vinegar, tamari, and more 🌶. Simple, salty, and bursting with flavor! .
Sunday’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Fried rice is an intermittent obsession for me. Today’s creation was inspired by rainbow carrots I snagged from the grant park farmer’s market this morning and the very addicting Laoganma spicy chili crisp 🌶. Add 🍚, garlic, and whatever other veggies you have in the fridge and fry it in coconut oil with a touch of soy sauce and lime juice (and maybe #hoisin if you like a bit of sweetness 😸).
